Orofacial Pain & Sleep Disorders

Orofacial pain disorders and sleep disorders produce significant discomfort or dysfunction in the head, mouth, and neck. Without effective treatment, these conditions can become chronic, profoundly disrupt daily life, and lead to more extensive health problems.

The Causes Are Usually Complex

The entire head and neck region is a unit, with complex interconnections that support and depend on one another. This makes diagnosing orofacial pain conditions complicated, as the causes of pain are particular to each patient. The original problem can create other problems that reinforce and progress dysfunction, leading to chronic pain conditions.

At Facial Pain Specialists, we focus on understanding the patient’s history in order to identify and target the multiple areas that could be contributing to pain.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

Facial Pain

Pain or tenderness in the mouth, jaw, or face that affects the muscle (myofascial) or nerve (neuropathic) can range from mild to debilitating. Common conditions include burning mouth syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, and atypical face pain.

TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw and surrounding muscles. Without intervention, these often increase in severity and become chronic, impacting a patient’s physical and emotional well-being.

Chronic Headaches and Migraines

Headaches can occur anywhere in the face, neck, or head. Headaches can range in frequency and intensity, with symptoms varying from person to person and often even for an individual.

Sleep Disorders

Conditions that hinder a person’s ability to get a restful night’s sleep, such as bruxism (grinding), loud snoring, or sleep apnea, can greatly impact their daily life. Sleep disorders can also cause further medical issues that compound the disruption.

Getting Effective Treatment

Diagnosing and treating the cause of orofacial pain can be difficult because patients can suffer from multiple conditions that exacerbate and obscure the root cause.

Our patients come to us when traditional interventions have not been successful. Working with information from any prior diagnoses and a detailed patient history, our providers use an in-depth process to evaluate disorders. We work with each patient to develop personalized care plans that target the root cause of their condition.

Our Approach

Our personalized, integrative approach goes beyond the typical diagnosis to address the complex root causes of pain. Our experienced providers are board certified in orofacial pain and have the unique set of skills and knowledge to help our patients find effective treatment.  As your partner in care, our goal is to bring relief, restore the ability to function, and get you back to the life you enjoy.
